Protect your Home this Winter

Statistics show that there is an increase in burglaries in the winter months. With darker nights drawing in, now is the time to increase your property's security and give you peace of mind in your home.

The Do's and Don't of Keeping your Home Secure this Winter

Don't post about holidays on social media.

  • Posting pictures while you're away on holiday is a great way of letting a burglar know that your home is empty. Instead, post your holiday photos when you arrive home with a caption like "Such a great time away in the sun, back home to the chilly weather 🥶".

Don't hide keys outside.

  • Hiding keys under doormats or in plant pots makes a burglar's day! The first thing a burglar will look for is a spare key as this makes their life so much easier. Instead of leaving a spare key outside, leave a key with a trusted neighbour so that they can access your property in case of an emergency.

Do make sure that doors and windows are locked.

  • When leaving the house, be sure to check that your doors and windows are locked and secure. Some insurers do not cover if a burglary was caused by an open window or door, so ensure that you are covered in the worst-case scenario.

Do install outdoor lighting.

  • Outdoor lighting is a great way to keep your property secure. Making sure that your entryways and paths are lit ensures that if someone approaches your home, they are more likely to be seen.

  • An added bonus to outdoor lighting is that certain types can be motion sensor-activated, meaning that if a burglar is trying to sneak up to your house, they will immediately be caught out by the motion-activated lights and hopefully scared off.

Do install security systems.

  • The best way to secure the safety of your home is to install a security system suited to your property. This could include:

    • CCTV Cameras

    • Intruder Alarms

    • Door Access Control

Installing a security system not only protects your home, but it can also have a variety of other benefits. A basic alarm system could reduce your insurance, whereas a full security installation with CCTV and intruder alarms is favoured by an insurer and could result in a bigger reduction of your insurance bill.

At Central FS, we can help tailor a security system to you and your home's specific needs, ensuring that your property has the best protection possible.
